Register Your Clydesdale

Rules Governing Entries

​

Clydesdale stallions and mares will be admitted to registry in the Clydesdale Stud Book of the United States as follows:

​

  1. Clydesdale stallion, mare, or gelding be sired and out of a dam both recorded in the Clydesdale Stud Book of the United States.

  2. Clydesdale stallion, mare, or gelding registered in the Clydesdale Stud Book of Canada.

  3. Imported Clydesdale stallion, mare, or gelding by sire and out of dam both recorded in the Clydesdale Stud Book of Great Britain.

  4. A certificate of service, signed by the recorded owner of the sire, or the recorded lessee of a sire, must be filled out on the application for entry where the sire is not recorded in the name of the owner of the dam at the time of service, and the eligible dams, granddams, etc, of American Bred stallions and mares must be recorded.

  5. An animal accepted for registry is regarded as recorded.

  6. Imported Clydesdale stallion, mare, or gelding will be admitted only upon the certificate of the Secretary of the Clydesdale Horse Society of Great Britain and Ireland or the registrar of the Canadian National Records, certifying a full three generation pedigree of registered Clydesdales.

  7. Beginning January 1, 2021, every 50th foal registered into the Clydesdale Stud Book of the United States will be required to have DNA parent verification. This will be free of charge to owners of the foal, unless the DNA parentage cannot be verified. If parent verification is inaccurate, the breeder/owner will be required to pay for the DNA of the foal & mare(s) or stallion(s) to prove parentage. The owner/breeder will also be required to DNA parent verify their next 2 foals at their cost. If these foals’ DNA is accurate, no additional parent verification is required. However, if any of the subsequent foals’ DNA parent verification is false, ALL foals registered by said owner/breeder will be required to be DNA parent verified before entry into Clydesdale Stud Book of the USA.

CONDITIONS & FEES

​

  1. No application shall be considered until the fees are paid; nor shall any number be assigned by the Secretary until every requirement has been complied.

  2. When entries or transfers are made, the certificate given by the Secretary shall constitute the receipt for the fees, but such certificate shall not be binding upon the Association in case of error.

  3. Fees can be found on the fee schedule.

  4. The breeder of an animal is the recorded owner of the dam (or lessee) at the time of service. The first owner of a foal is the recorded owner of the dam at the time the foal is dropped.

  5. In case the animal offered for entry is owned by other than the owner of the dam at the time of birth, a transfer of said dam is required to the present owner from the previous owner.

  6. Names cannot be duplicated. When a name sent in has already been taken the Secretary will suggest a substitute and await the approval of the owner. In no instance can a recorded name be changed on a pedigree.

  7. If color changes, the owner should return the paper to the Secretary so the color change can be recorded on the papers. A new written description, along with a photo of the marking change should accompany the request. There is no fee for this service.

  8. All horses born to 2014 and after must be sired by a stallion with a DNA marker on file with the Clydesdale Breeders of the U.S.A. Click the link below or on the Printable forms page to download a copy of the DNA Request Form.

Lease Agreements: All lease agreements shall be completed on official lease agreements forms of the Clydesdale Breeders of the U.S.A., shall be filed with the office of the Secretary, and shall contain the following information: registered name, number, age, and pedigree description of the horse being leased; name and address of owner/lessor and lessee (printed and typed); beginning date of lease and either 1) termination date, or 2) statement that lease continues until further notice; signature of owner/lessor and lessee. A lease may be terminated by the owner/lessor by filing with the Secretary a written notice clearly identifying the lease and the termination date of the lease, and stating that a copy of the notice of termination has been mailed to the lessee at the lessee’s last known address. If the written notice of termination is received by the Secretary after the termination date stated in the notice, then the termination date shall be deemed to be the date of receipt by the Secretary. During the period that the lease is in effect, the lessee shall be deemed to be the recorded owner of any foal born to the leased mare, unless the lease agreement expressly provided otherwise, signed by the owner/lessor and the lessee, is received by the Secretary prior to or simultaneously with a request for registration of the foal. Foals born on the termination date shall be deemed to be owned by the lessee. Subleases shall be subject to all the foregoing rules and shall also require the written consent of the owner/lessor as a condition to filling. Lease recording does require a fee, pending membership status.

Prefixes:  A member may register a prefix for a fee. Such prefixes are to be restricted to and required of every foal recorded by that breeder.

  • A. Use of Scottish or Canadian prefixes prohibited.

  • B. Proprietors right to prefix shall be lost by 20 consecutive years of non-use.

  • C. In cast of herd sale or dispersal where all or a substantial portion of herd is sold to one purchaser, the herd prefix may be  transferred to the new owner(s) upon written consent to the proprietor of the prefix, and the Board of Directors.

  • D. Only animals bred by the proprietor of the prefix may bear his prefix name. The proprietor of the prefix may extend the use of the prefix reserved in his name to members of his immediate family.

  • E. Every animal bred by the proprietor of a prefix shall bear the prefix of the breeder, if in his ownership at the time of birth.  Animals sold in utero may use the breeder’s prefix with breeder’s written permission.

  • F. Breeders may have only one active prefix; each prefix must be paid for; prefix applications must have board approval, prefix must be at least 2 letters, one must be a member of the Association to have a prefix.

ERRONEOUS OR FRAUDULENT ENTRIES OF TRANSFERS

​

* Should an animal have been admitted to entry, or transferred through misrepresentation or fraud, the Pedigree Committee, on discovery of the same, shall declare the entry or transfer void, together with any entries that may have been made of descendants of such animals.

* When an animal shall have been entered or transferred through misrepresentation or fraud, the Pedigree Committee may direct the Secretary to refuse for record any subsequent entry or transfer dependent upon the signature of any person implicated in such fraudulent entry or transfer.
